Hogwarts came to Chandigarh on March 19th, 2017 with this brilliant idea initiated by Devisha Manocha, a student of MCM DAV College, Sector 36 Chandigarh. On Sunday at S Café and Bar; Devisha Manocha, Athira Jamwal, Anay Dhiman and Varun Batra hosted the pilot event of ‘The Order of Merlin’, which was attended by nearly 150 people of tricity. People were given letters of acceptance and were sorted in four Hogwarts Houses, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff.

The order comprised of Anay Dhiman as Head Auror, Athira Jamwal as Deputy Minister of Magic, Devisha Manocha as Deputy Headmistress and Varun Batra as Minister of Muggle Affairs. As soon as people entered the premises, they were given a letter of acceptance, along with a map of Hogwarts and the sorting ceremony began momentarily. People were given a questionnaire, based on that which they were sorted into four houses. The questionnaire assessed the characteristics of people with respect to four houses. Houses at Hogwarts were both the living and learning communities for its students. Each year group of students in the same house shares the same dormitory and many classes.

Since this event was the beginning of series of event of this school year, the magical ‘sorting hat’ was placed on each new student’s head during the Sorting ceremony and the Sorting Hat announced the house the student is to join.

Apart from the sorting ceremony, there was a performance by ‘Qissa the Band’, where they played Harry potter themed music. There were Harry Potter signature dishes and drinks too.

Preetkiran, a student of BSc Hons in PU campus, said that she liked the ambience and theme of the episode. That was one of the few themed events or clubs that were there in Chandigarh. It was fun and such affairs should be encouraged.

Harkirat Kaur, a student of PEC said she is a huge Harry Potter fan, and is so happy that such an event is occurring in Chandigarh. She told Mirror, “I am really excited for upcoming events after the sorting ceremony. I hope it is worth the wait.”

Athira and Varun told Mirror that they are planning to hold more such episodes of the club, including a Hogwarts themed tri-wizard competition and Yule ball. It took more than 8 months for the Order to conceptualize the idea and bring it into reality. Athira said, “The idea first spouted in Devisha’s head and then all of us collaborated together. There were volunteers for décor and management while finance was managed by Varun.”

Anay Dhiman responsible for handling social media, further asserted, “We aim to evolve the fandom in Chandigarh. Stay glued to the Facebook page.”
