April 27, 2017: The day turned out to be a mournful for the Bollywood industry, as veteran actor Vinod Khanna, passed away at 11:20 AM due to bladder cancer (as per the official statement from the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital) at the age of 70. Vinod Khanna was admitted in the hospital on March 31 resulting from the complications arising due to severe dehydration.
Vinod Khanna was known as the one of the most charismatic and handsome actors in the industry. His acting potential was first noted in the 1971 with his role in Gulzar’s “Mere Apne”. The Punjabi actor had worked in the 1980-90’s some of the best films like, “Amar Akbar Anthony”, “Qurbaani” and “Insaaf” with two Filmfare awards in his basket. He was one of the most beloved actor in the cinema industry. Along with his eminent position in the Cinema Industry, he was also a known name in Politics. He was a sitting Lok Sabha member for Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP). He had won five times in the Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab.
Just like a film, his life was no less dramatic with twists and turns at every level. In 1968, Vinod Khanna debuted in Sunil dutt’s film “Man ka Meet” as villain with it being the start of the very talented man’s career. By the time of 1982, he had worked in the most successful films that Bollywood ever produced and had worked with actors like Rajesh Khanna, Rajkumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Rishi Kapoor and many more. Vinod was one of the highest paid actors in the industry by that time.
In his personal life, Vinod Khanna happily married Geetanjali in 1971 and gave birth to two sons– Rahul Khanna and Akshaye Khanna, who later became actors. In the late 70s, Vinod became a disciple of Osho and moved to Rajneeshpuram (Osho’s camp) in the early 80s. It was due to his frequent absence from his house that led to the divorce between the couple. In 1990, Vinod returned to India, and married Kavita, after a year of which they gave birth to a son– Sakshi and daughter– Shraddha.
Khanna entered politics in 1997 by joining BJP and then further got elected from the Gurdaspur Constituency in the 1998’s Lok Sabha election. In his political life he had the rank of Union Minister for culture and tourism, Minister of External Affairs as a Minister of State (Punjab) and had won several times in the Lok Sabha elections.
Vinod was one of the most beloved actors in the cinema industry, with more than a dozen hits. His demise had startled most of the actors and some of his friends could not resist to express their grief for this great soul via tweets. Rishi Kapoor, who played Khanna’s younger brother in “Amar Akbar Anthony” and worked with him in another memorable hit “Chandni”, tweeted, “Will miss you Amar. RIP. Remembering the good times with you, Vinod. Thank you for being my friend.”
Vinod Khanna will always be in our hearts and his films will always keep him alive. RIP, Sir.
