Twenty-20 cricket or commonly known as T-20 was started in England in 2003 to popularize the game in UK. The format gained popularity and brought in huge crowds to the stadiums as a T-20 game lasted for just 3 hours. In a span of 4 years, every test playing country started organizing their own domestic T-20 tournaments and in 2007, the first T-20 World Cup was held in South Africa. Soon some of the cricket boards started organizing franchise based T-20 tournaments to bring in more money and glamour to the sport. The franchise based T-20 tournaments played all over the world are:
· IPL (started in 2008)
· BPL (started in 2012)
· SLPL (started in 2012 but closed down after its first season due to lack of sponsors)
· CPL (started in 2013)
· PSL (started in 2016)

Now the question is, what makes it so popular and how has it taken the entire world by storm in such a short period of time?

The reason for this is that a T-20 match is more or less like a movie for the audience simply because the duration of the match is about 3 hours. A movie has thrill, action, comedy and romance to keep the audience engaged but a movie is scripted and often predictable and sometimes leaked on the internet. A T-20 match, on the other hand, is packed with thrill and unpredictability as the situation can change anytime which constantly keeps the audience at the edge of their seats. Neither is a T-20 match scripted. Lastly in a movie unrealistic situations are shown to the audience to keep them engaged whereas a T-20 match is live in front of the audience, everything is real, no situation is fictitious.
These are some of the reasons why cricket fans all over the world have fallen in love with T-20 cricket and why it has gained a lot of popularity in many countries. Test cricket and one day cricket are time consuming and the result of that game takes 5 days and 8 hours respectively.

The popularity of T-20 cricket in India is such that movies do not make much business during IPL and T-20 World Cup while the TRPs of reality shows and daily soaps also go down because people love watching matches more. This popularity of T-20 cricket is not going to die down anytime soon and the format is here to stay for a long time because of its ever growing fame. The increase in the TV viewership of IPL this year is a proof of that and the viewership is on the rise every year, same is the case with the T-20 world cup which is held after every 2 years.
