Swachh Bharat Campaign Committee Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh today organized an Awareness Programme on ‘GREEN AND SAFE DIWALI’ at Government Model Senior Secondary School Sector 15, Chandigarh. About 150 students of class +1 and +2 attended the programme. Mrs. Amarjit Kaur Principal of the school welcomed the speakers, Teachers and Students of the school. Prof. Sween at onset while speaking on the importance of the Green Diwali said that for centuries, Diwali is known as the festival of lights but there is every danger, that it may not become a festival of noise and pollution. And she exhorted the students to light the earthen DIYAS which are disposable and eco friendly instead of the plastic strings.
UIFT, PU Assistant Professor, Dr. Avanish Kumar Sharma showed small movie clips and a
power point presentation on Crackers Free and Green Diwali and also focused on the ill
effects of the smoke and pollution for the human beings and for the nature (birds and
Dr. Parmjit Singh Kang from the PU Department of Life Long Learning & Extension advised
the students not to waste money in buying and cracking the crackers but if at all they
want to do it, then they must kept a bucket full of water readily available in case of
emergency. He also focused on not to wear synthetic clothes while bursting the
crackers. He emphasized that small children must be kept away from these things and
supervised. He also conveyed that Advanced Eye Care Unit of P.G.I. will remain open in
case of any emergency during this holly festival.
In last PU Centre of Social Work, Assistant Professor, Mr. Gourav Gaur addressed that we
are paying bills for electricity, water and every other things that we used, but the
life giving oxygen which comes from plants is free of cost. The only way to repay to the
nature is by planting at least one tree wherever possible.
