Star Wars is back after a decade with episode 7, the force awakens. It’s the most anticipated movie of the year and has broken records worldwide. Releasing this week in India, does it live up to the hype? In short it does, especially if you are a fan of the series.

Since this is a spoiler free review, I can’t talk about the characters. However, all characters are done justice in the movie. The new relatively unknown actors were a great pick since they feel like real people instead of movie stars. With actors like John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, you know the future of Star Wars is in safe hands.

One of the best things about the movie is how organically it develops from the original trilogy. The 6th movie came out in 1983 and with all the advancement in technology and CGI, it still retains the old Star Wars charm. Both the story and the action grow naturally and you can feel that 20 years have passed since that story, but it is still the world you knew and loved.

The action and the direction in this movie is just plain amazing. J J Abrams brings his A game here. The camera angles, the lasers, lights, special effects and even the 3D make for an amazing cinema experience. The audio work is excellent with the original score being used at just the right moments. The characters make the action sequences even more special. All the new characters, they react exactly like how you think they will react.

There is a lot of respect for the original trilogy by the cast and the crew and you can see all their love in here. There are dozens of Easter eggs and the story is tied so closely to the original trilogy that any Star Wars fan will instantly fall in love with the new trilogy.

I only have a couple of gripes with the movie. The story strays to close to the original instead of trying something new and it definitely leaves out some characters with little to no scenes. Maybe they had more development and their part was cut out in the final take or they’ll be used better in the sequels.

Bottomline, Star Wars is a great blockbuster cinema experience. If you are not a Star Wars fan you’ll like the movie and if you are a Star Wars fan you’ll love it.
