With the sole purpose of developing tactful acumen and a broader outlook amongst the delegates, the 4th edition of SDMUN kick-started on February 10th, 2017 on an enchanting note. The inauguration ceremony was a blend of stupendous performances by the students of the college, and an inspiring welcome speech by HOD of English Department, Dr. Balraj Thappar, teacher in-charge and director of SDMUN Mrs. Monika Soni. Thereby, creating an admirable aura to kick-star the day in high zeal.
The slogan for this years SDMUN is VOLTE FACE, which closely means a change of attitude and that is exactly what the high flying SDMUN wishes to bring. With around 130 delegates arriving to take part in the conference, SDMUN has truly showcased their brilliance in organizing such an event.
The Model United Nations Conference successfully provided a forum for the delegates to impersonate as diplomats and deliberate upon the baffling issues at the international front. The Historic Security Council discussed on the Vietnam War, 1968, the World Health Organization put to light the health in prison and alcohol abuse. While the United Nations Committee on the peaceful uses of outer space had the agenda of international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space, the International Freedom of Expression Exchange witnessed double delegation. Whereas, the conference to the parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized crime addresses the grave issue of nexus between drugs, corruption and organized crime in fight against illicit narcotic drugs.
The General Assembly addressed gender inequality with special reference to discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. While being vociferous enough in chalking out ways to surpass the problems on the international front, the delegate of Israel said, “The common wisdom in Israel is that women’s economic, social and cultural status has incomparably improved in recent years, and Israel is marching towards an age full of equality. This is encouraging many women, who believe that their status is on rise.”.
The conference provided an opportunity to the delegates to broaden the horizons and contemplate as the global citizens. The conference and not only encompassed all sorts of burning agendas but, also ensured the intermingling of diverse cultures on a common platform.
Somewhere between the moderated and un-moderated caucus, the first day of SDMUN 2017 successfully came to an end, the Deputy Secretary General, Maatul Singha said, “It is a moment of pride to witness our hard-work reaping positive results in the form a successfully organized Model United Nations conference. However, it could not have been possible without an amazing organizing committee like ours. Long way to go in the other two days!”
