After his infamous visit to the ATMs during the ‘demonitisation buzz’, the Indian National Congress, Vice-President, Rahul Gandhi is now likely to visit Panjab University for interaction with the students. Sources claim that the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) is trying to arrange his visit before the Punjab elections to woo young voters.

Senior NSUI leader, Manoj Lubana has affirmed Rahul Gandhi’s visit to PU but said that the date for visit has not yet been finalised. He said that once the schedule of visit was confirmed, NSUI members would visit each university department and hostel to inform students about it. Student would be asked to prepare questions on any relevant issue for this event. “It will be an open house for students in which they will interact with Rahul Gandhi”, he added.

As per data, 40-45 per cent of students of Panjab University belong to Punjab. If the tables turn in his favour, this could prove to be a big vote bank for Indian National Congress. While we are yet to see if this time ‘Junior Gandhi’ will pass or not, higher officials of Panjab University seem to be against Rahul Gandhi’s visit to PU. “For such political interactions, the city has earmarked the rally ground in Sector 25,” an official reportedly said.

Notably, it was for the first time that prominent leaders of the Congress actively participated in the university elections last year. Former Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda visited the city to announce the alliance of the NSUI with the Himachal Students Union (HIMSU) in last council elections. In fact, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Chief, Captain Amarinder Singh had called members of the university student council at his residence to discuss the financial crisis faced by the Panjab University.

Meanwhile, the NSUI in-charge of Chandigarh, Surjit Bharmori interacted with media persons and said that they would hold a survey of the ATMs of the tricity to know how many of them were in a working condition or having cash. The city will be divided into four zones for the purpose.
