PGGC 11 celebrated the National Sports Day with great pomp and show today in the college auditorium. National Sports Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of the ‘Wizard of Hockey’- Maj DhyanChand. The Physical Education Department organized the Collage and Poster Making competitions to celebrate the auspicious day. The theme chosen was ‘Golden Era of Indian Hockey (1924-1980)’. To add stars to the function, veteran hockey player and Olympic Gold Medalist, Mr. Balbir Singh Sr honored our college by accepting to preside over the occasion as the honorable chief guest. Along with him, hockey stalwarts from the city, Mr Sukhbir Singh Gill, Mrs Kamla Cheema Dalal and Ms Nishita adored the celebrations. Mr Balbir Singh Sr is the only Indian player who has scored the maximum number of goals (5) in an Olympic hockey game (Helsinki 1952). He is also the first sports person to be conferred upon with the Padma Shri award in year 1956. The Principal, Mr J S Raghu and HOD Physical Department Mr J S Brar welcomed the chief guest and other dignitaries. The students greeted him with a big round of applause when he chose to go to the dais to address, declining the offer of addressing from the chair. The 91 year old legend addressed the crowd of hundreds and gave invaluable ideas and tips to become a good sportsperson. He narrated his journey from a minnow to an Olympic gold medalist and it was undoubtedly amazing and inspiring. One thing he emphasized more and more was the importance of studies. He urged the students not to pursue their sports dreams at the cost of the studies, the mistake, which he committed long back for which he had to regret later. Mr Balbir gave away the prizes to the winners of the Collage and Poster Making competitions. The college’s Bhangra Team gave a scintillating performance to conclude the function. It was indeed a memorable day for students and teachers.
