Multiculturalism Strikes the Blind in SGGS College

A One Day National Seminar on the theme ‘Multiculturalism in Literature: Re-inventing Identities’ was organised by the Postgraduate Department of English of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College Chandigarh on February 17th, 2017. A number of scholars from Universities and Colleges across India participated and presented papers on the current cultural philosophy of multiculturalism.

sggs1Sponsored by the Sikh Educational Society, Chandigarh the seminar was also a commemoration of the 350th Prakash Purb of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the Golden Jubilee of the College. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Dr Surjit Patar, renowned poet and writer. The Keynote Address was delivered by Prof Simi Malhotra , Professor, Department of English, Jamia Millia Islamia University while the Guest of Honour was Prof Rumina Sethi, Chairperson, Department of English and Cultural Studies, Chandigarh. Pertinent questions pertaining to the understanding of multiple cultures and their inevitability in the present context were raised by them.

sggs2The Valedictory Session was presided by Navtej Johar, eminent choreographer and activist. Prof Shelley Walia, Professor and Fellow Senate, Panjab University, Chandigarh delivered the valedictory address on the occasion. The Seminar generated a healthy, cross disciplinary dialogue on related areas and issues of identity formation, race, ethnicity and gender.

Also present on the occasion were S Gurdev Singh Brar, President, Sikh Educational Society, Col (retd) Jasmer Singh Bala, Secretary, Sikh Educational Society, Dr Jyoti Lamba, Principal of the College.
