Listening between that conversation

There might be a reason why the words ‘listen’ and ‘silent’ are anagrams (made from the same alphabets). It might imply that one must ‘silent(ly) listen’ to someone who is employing around a hundred different muscles of his chest, neck, jaw, tongue, and lips to communicate verbally with you. Going into the depth of ‘verbal communication’, we find that, it is the sharing of information between individuals by using speech. ‘Sharing’ implies that there should be a two way flow of thoughts and ideas, in the absence of which the entire purpose of ‘verbal communication’ is defeated.

The later part is what we, as a listener, fail to understand. Our minds are perhaps constantly struggling with what to say next, rather than focusing on what the speaker is actually speaking. Or at other times, we employ our senses in deciding how to get an upper hand in the conversation by proving how strong our view point is. This is something which is not unheard, but is seldom noticed. (Whereas, if we listen carefully to what the other person is saying, we can come up with witty replies and enjoy a quality conversation, too!)

Having witnessed all this as a speaker, we still do not carry the characteristics of a ‘good listener’, when we are one. Ultimately, it turns out to be a vicious circle where one doesn’t improve as a speaker and definitely not as a listener. In this age of modernization, we must strive hard to uphold the wonderful art of verbal communication. Otherwise, our ideas, emotions and thoughts would be probably caught in just those 26 alphabets!
