108 years ago today, one of India’s greatest revolutionary freedom fighters, Bhagat Singh was born. And though he died young, his actions continue to inspire the youth and he still remains an idol for many.

Commemorating his birth anniversary, the student council of PGGC-11 organized an Inter-college declamation competition, inviting colleges from the tricity, dedicated to Shaheed Bhagat Singh. There was a lot to learn, a lot to discuss and a lot of inspiration to be gained from him, which was the sole purpose of holding the event.

The Principal, Mr. G.S. Raghu, along with the student council, welcomed the Guest of Honour, Prof.Jagmohan Singh, the retired HOD of the department of agriculture in PU, who also happens to be the nephew of Bhagat Singh himself. The event was given a kick start by Mr. G.S. Raghu who shared a few words with the students, pressurizing the need of hard work in the path towards success. He also lay emphasis on not only the patriotic struggle that Bhagat Singh had to face, but also how his attitude and qualities led him to becoming a legend at such a young age.

Students from different colleges participated and spoke about Bhagat Singh’s Ideologies and Visions with great enthusiasm. Different views were put forth; a lot of concepts were brought into limelight which were usually subsided. It gave a good platform to the students who connect with the revolutionary and are willing to be heard. There were songs sung, and poems recited, all inculcating a feeling of patriotism and will power in the youth.

At the end, Prof.Jagmohan Singh, being closely related to Bhagat Singh, shared a lot of facts about him that weren’t known much. He encouraged the students to study with a lot of determination, since Bhagat Singh, himself was very fond of studying. He had read over 300 books and was a promoter of literature. He believed that people can stand for themselves only if they are enlightened, and the only way they to enlighten them is to educate them.
