Film: G Kutta Se or A Wanton Heart

Director: Rahul Dahiya

G Kutta Se is a bold statement against honour killings in the stark region of rural Haryana. It is also an unadulterated take on the dubious nature of relationships of any kind, involving women.

Whether the gaze is that of a brother, a father, a lover or a husband, it is inherently patriarchal, subjecting, oppressing and dictating the terms of existence of womenfolk in Haryana. This situation in Haryana, that remains the central point of the chokehold around the women of Northern India is constantly depicted, as something that has been accepted, and propagated by women “elders” as well.

By providing a quiet narrative without additional commentary, moral or karmic clichés, Rahul Dahiya has managed to rip asunder the mask that North India hides behind when it comes to female equality and “traditionalism”.

This may be the only way to create change in a country whose actual traditions are rooted in blind fervour, fanaticism, gender discrimination and casteism, whose menfolk are foundering in the mud of taboo, clumsily groping at the lives of women they lust after but are too cowardly to face their desires like men.

The first step towards recovery is knowing and admitting that you have a problem. The lives of three unfortunate women, presented on a platter, for us to cringe at, may be the educated director’s approach to a revolution.

Rahul Dahiya has made a film along the lines of NH10 and made that niche deeper and more authentic by keeping his anti hero’s origins from the same region. That is where it wins over from just being a horrific tale of surviving and escaping perversion to one about adapting to it for the sake of ones own survival.

Commenting upon the journey of the film, Mr. Sudhir Mehra (Assistant Professor, Department of English, Panjab University) said, “The most important thing in this film, apart from all the technical and conceptual efficacy it carries, is the true research Rahul Dahiya underwent. Despite being a haryanavi himself, I never saw him getting swayed by the very complacency which one could always become a victim of. He was thoroughly objective throughout and met people or families across the region who had, directly or indirectly, been a part of such tragic killings which world classifies as deaths in the name of honor. All this while from writing and discussing script, auditions, shoot and post shoot I could always see that zeal in his eyes to call a spade a spade. He was never a slave of false pride. I am pained at the way media typifies a film. This film does not only talk about the rural, it does suggest a lot about breaking relationships in urban areas.”

I can say it with great conviction that ‘G Kutta Se’ is a film dealing with its subject with utmost sincerity and courage. I appeal through the channels to raise awareness in the masses that the masses must not surrender to the whims and fancies of distributors and should decide which film they want to be screened in their areas. We believe and we think that there is a choice available to the audience to go and see the film of their choice. But the reality is our choices are already hijacked , we see what we get on the screens. This गोरखधंधा needs to be checked. It is most embarrassing that the August audience living in the tricity zone was deprived of such masterpiece. Still a demand can be placed and the movie may be screened in a good theatre. Surprisingly, the films we had the choice of watching after 16th June 2017 were judged and reviewed as dumb films. Unfortunately, they had but 99 percent more more screens than allotted to ‘G Kutta Se’. This is the injustice which we wish to raise our voice against. We choose what we see.”, he further added.
